PASSPORT
Passport and arrival
Match the spelling on your passport to your flight booking and check it remains valid for the trip. Confirm current entry requirements before departure, and use Visit Japan Web where available to streamline arrival procedures.
INSURANCE
Travel insurance
Compare overseas medical cover, personal accident, baggage loss and trip delay or cancellation. For skiing or snowboarding, confirm that winter sports and emergency evacuation are included. Rental cars need their own excess and loss-of-use checks.
WINTER SAFETY
Snow and service delays
Heavy snowfall can delay or suspend local trains and buses. Check service information before the first train, allow generous transfer time and avoid an itinerary that depends on the last train.
DRIVING
Winter rental cars
Bring a valid International Driving Permit if you plan to drive. Check winter tyres, 4WD, chains and insurance conditions; rail and local tours are the safer option for first-time snow driving.
Compare overseas medical, delay, cancellation, baggage and liability cover. If you ski or snowboard, read the policy for winter-sports cover and exclusions.
