PACK LIGHT, STAY WARM

Stay warm,
move lightly.

01

Dress in layers

Make it easy to add or remove a layer for the change between heated interiors and winter streets.

  • Thermal base layer
  • Warm mid-layer: knit or fleece
  • Windproof, waterproof down jacket or coat
  • Gloves, scarf and ear-covering hat
  • Waterproof shoes with non-slip soles
  • Spare socks for wet days
02

Heat packs and small warmers

Pack hand warmers and adhesive packs separately for long walking days.

  • One or two disposable heat packs per day
  • Adhesive packs for back or waist
  • Thermos or insulated tumbler
  • Large scarf or light blanket
  • Do not apply heat packs directly to skin
  • Check airline rules before flying
03

Choose luggage for transfers

A manageable case is easier than a large one when changing trains and walking on snowy streets.

  • 3–4 nights: 20–22 inch case or 35–45L
  • 4–5 nights: 24 inch case or 50–65L
  • One cabin-sized day bag
  • Waterproof case cover and name tag
  • Check hotel and station locker sizes
  • Confirm airline baggage allowance separately
04

Keep these in your bag

Small items for snow and delays make a real difference.

  • Compact umbrella and waterproof pouch
  • Power bank, charger and adapter
  • eSIM, SIM or roaming plan
  • Medication in original packaging
  • Passport copy and booking confirmations
  • Some cash and a travel card
  • Tissues and a small rubbish bag
  • Shoe traction pads

DOCUMENTS & SAFETY

Four checks
before you leave.

PASSPORT

Passport and arrival

Match the spelling on your passport to your flight booking and check it remains valid for the trip. Confirm current entry requirements before departure, and use Visit Japan Web where available to streamline arrival procedures.

INSURANCE

Travel insurance

Compare overseas medical cover, personal accident, baggage loss and trip delay or cancellation. For skiing or snowboarding, confirm that winter sports and emergency evacuation are included. Rental cars need their own excess and loss-of-use checks.

WINTER SAFETY

Snow and service delays

Heavy snowfall can delay or suspend local trains and buses. Check service information before the first train, allow generous transfer time and avoid an itinerary that depends on the last train.

DRIVING

Winter rental cars

Bring a valid International Driving Permit if you plan to drive. Check winter tyres, 4WD, chains and insurance conditions; rail and local tours are the safer option for first-time snow driving.

BOOK THE LAST DETAILS

Review flights, stays and cars
one last time.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Sort your travel insurance
before you go.
